Lets the beauty of nature encourage innovative thinking and acting

An ecological future, one that is resilient, resource-abundant and conducive to further life, lies in the knowledge banks of nature’s elegant solutions taken from over 3.8 billion years of a research and development period. In the innovative discipline of Biomimicry, nature has already found solutions to, many of the design issues we are struggling with on a daily bases as architects, engineers and designers. It offers us a new perspective, both at a micro and macro perspective, through which to look at our design challenges in order to achieve ecological solutions to making, building, processing and organizing our industries and cities; going beyond our current practice of sustainability.

Lecture and discussion with Janine Benyus,

20 November 2013 at 4 pm

Join us for a lecture and discussion with Janine Benyus and a panel of experts regarding nature’s inspiration and solutions in teaching us smart ways to design holistically. Given a wide scale of projects concerning urban design (inspired by ecosystems), small projects for water harvesting (inspired by a Namibian beetle), to how to design for extreme environments both in closed conditions (Nasa – up in space), and open systems (extreme weather/environments on earth).

Using such a platform for discussion, join us to speak with the designers, architects and ecologists turning to nature. The group includes Biomimicry expert Janine Benyus who has been awarded this years Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development, Thomas Nyström, Maria Nyström, Fredrik Moberg and Larry Toups . The seminar is moderated by Anna Maria Orru, practicing biomimicry architect/researcher in Sweden.

The session will begin with a bio-vernissage opening showcasing student groups in Sweden from KTH and Chalmers who has been winners/finalists for the International Biomimicry Student challenge for the past 2 consecutive years. The students will have a poster presentation and short talk at the opening.

Preliminary schedule:

15.00 – 16:00

Registration and Bio-vernissage opening of winning Swedish Student Biomimicry competition work from 2012-2013 (KTH and Chalmers). There will be short presentations by the students and some refreshments provided.
